WHAT IS NASAL ALLERGY?

“Allergic Rhinitis” is one of the reasons why many patients frequently refer to ENT specialists. The first and most important symptoms in the diagnosis of allergy are: sneezing, runny nose, nasal itching, nasal congestion and nasal discharge. Headaches, olfactory disorders and fatigue can be seen as other additional symptoms. Apart from nasal allergy, the patient may have one or more of the diseases such as asthma, urticaria, eczema, allergic conjunctivitis.

The second step in the diagnosis of allergic rhinitis is examination. During the examination, swollen and pale conchae and serous discharge may be seen. In some cases, polyps caused by allergies can be seen.

Another method of diagnosis is allergy tests. Allergen skin tests are not very reliable. Serum-specific IgE tests (Rast - Eliza) are more reliable. Nasal provocation tests are valuable. Nasal cytology is another diagnostic method.

In addition, computed tomography and MR are diagnostic methods.

Allergic Rhinitis Treatment Methods

There are 3 steps in the treatment of allergic rhinitis:

1. Protection and elimination
2. Pharma therapy
3. Immunatherapy

The first step in treatment is to protect the patient from allergen exposure. For this, it should be determined what the patient is allergic to.

It should be determined whether the disease is perennial rhinitis or seasonal rhinitis.

Mites, cockroaches, pets, mold fungi, powders, pollen are sources of allergy. Sensitive people should stay away from these allergens and protect themselves.

Allergic ailments increase in seaside cities and humid environments. It decreases at high altitudes. Environmental pollution is one of the factors that cause the disease to increase. Allergic reactions are more common in rural environments.

The second method of treatment is drug use. Topical corticosteroids, antihistamines, topical and systemic decongestants can be used.

Immunotherapy is not as popular today as before. The results of immunotherapy are not very pleasant. It is used in limited cases today.

Other Disorders Caused By Allergic Rhinitis

Apart from the treatment of allergic rhinitis itself, the resulting diseases should be treated. Serous otitis (middle ear fluid accumulation), pharyngitis and nasal polyposis are some of them. For this, medication treatment and if necessary, treatment options such as FESS surgery are used by the ENT specialist physician.
