CIRCUMCISION

WHAT IS A SUNNET?

When babies are born, they are born with a foreskin that covers the head of the penis. Circumcision is the process of removing part of the skin surgically and removing the head part.

NEWBORN SUNNET

With the circumcision performed in the neonatal period, infants are prevented from suffering from urinary tract infections, phimosis, balanitis during childhood.

Around 55-65% of newborn male babies are circumcised each year in the United States. Circumcision is often preferred for religious beliefs. In addition, hygiene concerns are preferred by families for social or cultural reasons.

Wound healing is easy and very fast in the neonatal period, since the veins of the penis are very thin, bleeding is very rare.

Since the baby has no personality development, there is no psychological trauma.

Since it can be performed under local anesthesia, the baby does not need to starve before circumcision. Even if the baby has a full stomach, he usually sleeps during the circumcision procedure.

It has been determined that there is a 10-fold difference in the development of urinary tract infection between infants who are circumcised and not.

Circumcision reduces the risk of urinary tract infections approximately 10 times. In circumcised men, the risk of penile cancer may be low. Some studies have shown that circumcision protects from some sexually transmitted diseases such as HIV.

Penile problems such as irritation, inflammation and infection have been observed more frequently in uncircumcised men.

In which cases is not circumcised?

If the baby is born prematurely, circumcision can be postponed until a later period if there is an anatomical disorder in the penis (such as hypospadias), a family history of bleeding disorders (hemophilia, etc.) or a general health problem.

What are the possible complications?

Neonatal circumcision complications occurring between 0.2% and 2% of cases are rare. The most common minor bleeding, local infections, re-circumcision due to insufficient circumcision (phimosis) and skin adhesions

How is a newborn circumcision done?

Thanks to the creams applied to the penis area 20-40 minutes before the procedure in anesthesia, it is aimed to make the local injection to that area painless. In addition to anesthesia, the baby's stress is tried to be reduced by giving a pacifier soaked in sugar water.

Neonatal circumcision is performed within the first 10 days (often in the first 48 hours) in the operating room, on a special heated table.

Neonatal circumcision can be done with the classical surgical circumcision bell method or thermocoter.

Circumcised penis care;

It is very important to keep this area clean after circumcision. Wound care is recommended with antiseptic creams. If the baby's aim is smeared on the penis, it is recommended to clean it with boiled and cooled water.

After circumcision, the penis may appear slightly swollen (edematous) and red initially. You may notice some amount on the diaper. You may also notice a slight yellow discharge or crust after a few days. These are normal wound healing processes.

The stitches will fall off by themselves, do not need to be removed.

However, in case of constant bleeding, increased redness or bruising, fever, consult your doctor.
