BREAST CANCER SCREENING

Self-Examination of the Person (Manual, Visual and Inpatient Examination)

Every woman over the age of 20 should examine her within the first 10 days from the end of her period. Women who do not have menstruation can do this by choosing a specific day every month.

How to Self Breast Examination?

First of all, a visual examination should be made in front of the mirror. Hands are put on the waist and the symmetry of the breasts is checked. It is observed whether there is a depression, discoloration or a visible mass in the breast. The same process is repeated with the hands raised. Then, the inpatient examination phase is started. The right breast is checked first. It is good to put a small pillow under the right shoulder for more comfortable control, the right hand should be placed behind the head. Circular movements are performed by starting around the nipple with two fingers of the left hand and gently pressing the breast tissue. In this manual clockwise movement, sensitivity and mass are investigated. Then the same process is repeated for the left breast.

Every person is his doctor. It has been proven by research that women who know and apply breast self-examination regularly and discover possible breast diseases early by healing. Because the treatment of breast cancer that is diagnosed early is much easier and successful than the cases of breast cancer that are diagnosed late and thus advanced.

Physical Examination by Physician

A physical examination is called a clinical examination by a doctor who specializes in breast diseases. The doctor performs the examination with the patient's story. If it deems necessary, it may request that examinations such as ultrasound or mammography be performed. Even if a woman over the age of 40 does not have a complaint about her breast, she should consult a specialist once a year. As we mentioned above, the treatment process of early diagnosed cases is much easier.

Mammography

Mammography is the leading imaging method for breast scans. Mammography is the earliest detection that can detect breast cancer. A kind of x-ray is taken by compressing the breast between the two layers. Every woman over the age of 40 should apply to mammography once a year. People with a family history of breast cancer should have a mammogram at an earlier age.

Breast Ultrasound

Breast ultrasonography (US) scans in more detail than mammography. By performing a cross-sectional imaging, the tissues do not overlap each other and prevent possible diagnostic errors. Small cancer foci are thus easier to diagnose. In addition to mammography, breast ultrasound may be requested from women with dense breast tissue.

A small hand held device on the breast ultrasound is passed over the breast. The device sends sound waves to the breast and the formations inside the breast are examined on the opposite screen. It does not contain radiation, so it can be easily applied to pregnant and lactating women. The fact that the person taking the ultrasound is experienced is important in order not to overlook the findings.

Biopsy

If cancer is suspected after the screening methods mentioned above, cell and tissue samples are taken from the breast and biopsy is performed. It performs the examination process by pathology physicians using microscopic methods. Both exact diagnosis and all details of the disease are revealed in this way.

PET

PET method is the newest and advanced diagnostic method. The patient takes a radioactive substance and enters the PET device. Cancer cells immediately retain the radioactive substances given by their nature. In this way, the locations of active cells are determined. Mammography and ultrasound are generally preferred among the imaging methods for diagnosis. The PET method is especially preferred to see how the patient undergoing cancer treatment is after treatment. In addition, PET extraction can be used to see if the cancer has spread to another location, especially if it has spread to the lymph nodes. Although we describe breast cancer screening methods, PET method is not counted as breast cancer screening method.

As a result, breast cancer is a disease that can be treated today, the important thing is to start treatment at the right time with early diagnosis.
